Telehealth

All About Online Therapy (telehealth, e-counseling, etc.)

Q. What is telehealth?
A. Telehealth is the use of technology to provide convenient, real-time healthcare to clients. In my practice, this means that we will have psychotherapy sessions via live videoconference.

Q. Is it as effective as in-person therapy?
A. Yes! A scientific review of 22 studies examining the effectiveness of online therapy found that not only is it effective, but it is AS effective as in person therapy. (Andrews et al., 2010). Plus, therapy is most effective when you can get a "sufficient dose of treatment" by attending regularly, which is made easier when you don't have to commute!

Q. What are the advantages of telehealth?
A. There are several advantages.
  • No valuable time spent commuting
  • Clients participate in therapy where they are most comfortable
  • Extremely private
  • Increased access to care
  • Improved client engagement and satisfaction with care

Q. Is it secure?
A. Absolutely. I take client privacy and security very seriously. The telehealth platform I have chosen (doxy.me) is secure, encrypted, and HIPAA-compliant. You do not even have to create an account or log in, which means you do not have to give any of your information.

Q. What equipment do I need?
A. All you need is a high-speed internet connection and a computer/tablet/smartphone with a webcam and microphone (either integrated or external).

Q. Is it easy to use?
A.
Very! The platform I use (doxy.me) was found to be the easiest telehealth platform to use in a recent study by Clemson University (Agnisarman et al., 2017). It has a very simple, clear interface and requires no downloads. Even if you do not feel very technologically savvy you should have no trouble with it. Before your first appointment I will email you a link. You will click on the link and "check in" to your appointment when prompted. That's it!
